I am new to raising chickens, I kept a small clutch of chicks recently before they went to a friends farm (nothing like rearing a small clutch for both awareness and very good socialization of the birds.)

I recommend skimming this ebook so as to be familiar with the various common illnesses and aware prior to getting chickens to be on the alert for changes in the birds. We didn't experience any problems, but it's always good to raise awareness levels. You'll want to google for images and further information, just consider this as the quick reference guide on your Kindle or tablet.

Chicken Diseases Help A Quick Guidebook on Chicken in Sickness and Health edition by Norman Nelson Professional Technical eBooks Reviews

I was truly overwhelmed with this book. Mr. Nelson, I can not thank you enough for your enlightenment on raising chickens and what illness to watch for. Everyone must take the time to read this book, rather your raising chickens or even contemplating raising chickens. Yes, it is very graphic, to see the explicit detail, but very educational as well. Gave as gift.
I learned alot it was very informative.
Helps with some of the lesser known and well known diseases. Highly recommended for new to chicken breeding and experts.
Helpful book
This is a good basic overview, its detailed enough for someone just starting out with chickens and as its fairly small book it is easy to find what you are looking for, but if you are going to have more then 2 or 3 laying hens, I would recommend a more detailed book for overall care.
This short book of 1298 locations (app. 58 pages) can be read in half an hour or so. The information in this book is also available online. Most of the information can be found on Wikipedia and sites on poultry (just type 'poultry disease' in your search engine and you'll find several sites). Those sites contain more information than this book.

(Update, 31 july 2012 I got this book when it was offered for free (temporary as a promotion) and I'm glad I did not pay the 9,99 or 13,79 dollars this booklet now costs, I don't think it is worth that much money. As I said all the information in this little book can be found on the net, and then you'll have pictures with it, making it easier to understand than just text.)

If you find it handy to have a booklet on your e-reader with a review of 32 chicken diseases (symptoms, causes and treatment) and what you can do to prevent disease, this book might be a good choice. It is a reference-book that tells you about symptoms etc in a way that is easy to understand.

There are no pictures in this book (except the one on the cover), so if you like to see a picture of the ailment -for example 'Scaly Leg' is very clearly visible on a picture-, you may want to buy another book on chicken diseases, or combine this book with pictures you can find online.
